Note: I just got burned by their method of proxying the Google store. I was using the Proton wallet app; Proton updated it on Nov 20th, and this required me to use an updated app to talk to the Proton server. it's 10 days later, and the app is not updated in the Unplugged store. I wrote a bug report to both proton and unplugged. -- Luckily, you can use the website to access the proton wallet. But this defeats the point of the app. Kind of a deal breaker.
The approach I have been attempting is to turn the process around: I find a secure platform and then add the phone service as an add in. Currently that ties the device into areas that allow me Wi-Fi connections, but that can be augmented with a Mi-Fi. The big downside is still the large form factor of devices, but that is getting better. There is still a lot of functionality to match a modern phone, but it is a start.
My thoughts are that if people start using things in that way, someone will provide an out of the box solution. Right now the mindset is that there is a portable phone with apps on the side. I would like to have a portable computer that I can do voice applications on. With technologies like Starlink (the first step towards a classic Dyson Sphere BTW), we may be seeing the end of the need for the cellular network for connectivity.
I am happy to say that they finally made some steps forward, and put the kernel on GitHub on Mar 31, 2025. https://github.com/werunplugged

Do you know who made the CPU? It doesn't seem to be listed on their website..
I dont know at the moment, I would hope that they address this in a document soon, I have the same concern

Yes I get it, but even myself, I want a turn key out of the box solution, if we expect this to gain traction.
